Binance gets Rekt

Binance suffered the largest crypto theft on record Thursday, with attackers stealing an estimated $6.3 billion from wallets. The exchange initially pointed to a compromised employee laptop, but says investigators have since uncovered additional breaches. Binance says funds are safe, and that it will cover the losses so customers don’t have to. The exchange also says it has set aside more than $6.34 billion of its own money to replace the stolen crypto. The event has triggered a classic risk-off reassessment across exchange equities, where platforms face the dual headwinds of potential volume migration into cold storage and heightened regulatory pressure on centralized infrastructure.

We’d give Coinbase a solid B+ on the quarter. Unfortunately, Coinbase still has to contend with a high-performant Robinhood (HOOD) in the eyes of investors. Read more →
